HRNP has set up a programme of summer events in partnership with WECH and London Tigers. These are all at WECH Community Centre, Chantry Close, are open to young people aged 13-19 (unless otherwise stated) and are all free.

Employment fairs - create CVs, discover job opportunities, learn from entrepreneurs or get an apprenticeship: (14-24s)

Tuesday 18th August, 2pm to 5pm – “Maida Hill Market Tea Dance”  **celebrating the launch of ‘Pensioners Day’ at Maida Hill Café Gallery’**

The market piazza and café (2 Fernhead Road), will host a spectacular Tea Dance reminiscent of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s.  Come and enjoy afternoon tea & scones, plus music, dance, fancy dress, and much more! Wednesday 26th August, 6pm to 8pm – “Writers and Poets Corner”

Share the spoken word with like-minded locals…pop in for poetry and prose over coffee and cake at Maida Hill Café Gallery, 2 Fernhead Road W9. Last Wednesday of every month.

 

Thursday 6th / 13th / 20th / 27th / August, 10.30am – “Walking for Health”

Get to know your area, enjoy the fresh air, make new friends, at this weekly ‘Harrow Road Healthy Futures’ event. Every Thursday until end of September 2009. Friday 7th / 14th / 21st August, 6.30pm to 8pm – “Plaza Jazz People”

Plaza Jazz People founder Jonathan Cohen says: “I’m on the record locally for saying that ‘Music is the best social glue there is’, and my experience of forming Plaza Jazz People has made that feeling stronger.  I wanted to bring the best musicians around to play for the people of our area because that’s what Maida Hill deserves – the idea is to inspire local people, showcase our area, and to change hearts, minds and perceptions about our home patch.  Whether the musicians have come 3000 miles like New York saxophone star Ingrid Laubrock, or 300 metres like me (I’ve lived in Maida Hill for over 25 years) everyone in Plaza Jazz People has commented on the friendly and appreciative vibe, and the excellent food!  We hope there’s something ‘tasty’ for everyone in our mix of jazz and world grooves and vibes.”

What’s on @ maida hill market July 2009

 Friday 24th and 31st July (6.30pm to 8pm) – “Plaza Jazz People”

Music for head, heart and feet: Plaza Jazz People has been wowing the community with its weekly residency at maida hill market since it opened in June 2009, playing live ‘al fresco’ music to an appreciative Harrow Road crowd.  A major coup for the area, Plaza Jazz People features world renowned musicians playing live for free every Friday.

 Saturday 25 July (1pm to 4pm) – “Flamboyan International Carnival Arts”

Get geared up for Carnival 2009 with local Mas camp Flamboyan, who will bring some early carnival flavour to Harrow Road with steel pan performances 1-2pm, and costume displays 3-4pm, Sat. 25 July.

To mark the opening of Churros and Chocolate UK,  a stall selling Spanish inspired chocolate-filled pastry, Maida Hill Market embraced the latino theme, dancing to the sounds of a Salsa band.

Music was provided by Latin Krazy; a salsa group based in the local area. (For more information contact Karin on 07801305059 or at karin@latink.fsnet.co.uk)
